The successful 2nd Diether Ocampo Charity Golf Tournament “Drive Fore The Youth” had Kris (Kristiyano-Islam) Peace Library as one of its beneficiaries. Attended by top showbiz personalities and golf enthusiasts, this noble sport game was organized by multi-awarded actor and philanthropist Diether Ocampo, and was held at the Tagaytay Highlands Golf and Country Club last July 21, 2011.

The event will be telecast by ABS-CBN’s Knowledge Channel who through Diether Ocampo introduced and interviewed Ashia Nocum, the youngest daughter of Kris Library’s founder Armand Nocum.  Ashia had the honor to do the ceremonial tee off with Diether Ocampo.  She ranked Top 5 Junior Golfer in the world at the age of 6 years old and now at 10 plays golf related charity games for Kris Library where is the youngest volunteer.  Armand thanks the nuns of the School of the Holy Spirit for supporting and allowing their student, Ashia, to take off from school and play golf for a worthy cause.

Among those spotted supporting this charity event were Zanjoe Marudo, Bea Alonzo, Monsour del Rosario, Apo Hiking Society’s Boboy Garovillo, Epi Quizon, sports analyst Anthony Suntay, and others. Despite the rain, they played on so that the poor wards of Kris Libraries can have a better life through education. Yes! The first Kris Library in Manicahan, Zamboanga City has branched out to Quezon City, Rizal Province, and in Tungawan, Zamboanga del Norte.

Kris Peace Library is a project of the A-Book-Saya Group (ABSG) founded by Christian-Muslim couple Armand and Annora Sahi-Nocum. It was built to cater to the educational needs of Christian and Muslim kids coming from at least 10 public schools in Zamboanga's East Coast, Barangay Manicahan, where schools have ill-equipped libraries and lack computers for used by poor kids.

ABSG’s advocacy is to fight books with guns; education and literacy versus terrorism, criminality, bigotry and hatred. It aims to save children from the jaws of terrorism, rebellion and criminality by exposing them to education as a peaceful and pragmatic way out of poverty. One more professional child is one less child warrior; one less future rebel and terrorist, is its credo.

Today, the Kris Peace Library has sponsored the schooling of 101 Christian and Muslim children, clocked some 100,000 visits from kids who read or borrow books; do research, have a free use of the library's eight donated computers; obtain catch-up reading lessons from Kris scholars and volunteers; and undergo basic computer lessons. Thanks to its supporters and donors.

But the challenge of giving does not stop with them. Be a part of the KRIS Library efforts; be a KRIS warrior. Know more about their advocacy and, God willing, share a part of yourself with these children in need. Visit www.krislibrary.com for details how you can help.

Your concrete action to help their cause today may yet stop one child from joining the ranks of child soldiers in the country ... and from dying for a mere plate of rice and dried fish.

I learned that the Zamboanga Golf and Country Club will have a big golf tournament this year. Hope it can channel and share its earnings to Kris Library.
