I was still in elementary school when the Casino de Zamboanga opened at the defunct Zamboanga Plaza Hotel in 1977 and was out of college when it closed down during the downfall of the Marcos Regime. I vividly remembered that it became one of the tourist come-ons of our city.

Though it is debatable should it be re-opened again, this is not my story about today. It’s about friendship all these years with the theme “The Way We Were”. I was invited to the 2nd reunion of the Casino de Zamboanga (CADEZA) Employees last November 11, 2011 (11/11/11) at the Gazebo of Astoria Regency where they gathered for re-acquaintance and friendship.

It was unfortunate my Mom (Tita Corteza) was not able to make it due to prior appointment. She became their close friend as she used to bring visitors who were either curious or wanted to try their luck there. Zamboanga Casino became popular too because of their beautiful female card dealers. It became a place where people unwind and enjoy playing casino games my Mom told me (I was a minor then and not allowed to enter the place).

Thanks to the social networking, the former employees of CADEZA were able to get in touch with each other in 2009 and started the idea for a possible reunion. The first was held last year October 10, 2010 (10/10/10). It was a success that they decided to have this second reunion which was spearheaded by Tony Iturralde. Most of them after their casino stint here when abroad and in other major cities like Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao and continued their careers in this field. Some settled down and had business in this city. They “came back home” for CADEZA.

It was fun to witnessed and see old friends meet again that night. You can see and feel the excitement in their faces. They invited National Disaster Regional Director Adriano Fuego as speaker in the first part of the program emceed by Erma Quebral. Bing Pastofide led the Thanksgiving Prayer after Pres. Ituralde welcomed everyone. After dinner, a slide show of old pictures, fun games, dance numbers, raffle draw, and awarding ceremony followed with Lala Fernando as the host in the second part.

Through secret voting by the CADEZA members, Tony Iturralde was given the Award of Excellence and the Top CADEZA Employee Award. It was a tie for Miss Friendship between Gigi Lorenzo and Babes Zapante. Belen Ducay was conferred the Ageless Beauty Award while Benny Escalante as named as the Ulirang Ama Awardee and Tessie Fermin as the Ulirang Ina Awardee.

My gratitude and hand salute to the officers and members of CADEZA for showing me that true friendship last forever. Hope for more fun and success in your 3rd reunion next year.
