The newly appointed School Superintendent OIC (Officer-In-Charge) of the Department of Education (DepEd)-Zamboanga City, Pedro “Pete” Natividad, had a praiseworthy 51st birthday celebration last January 6. Instead of a big birthday party at a famous restaurant or hotel, the endearing Pete commemorated his natal day with a twofold public service called   “Ayuda” (Help).

The first birthday,“Ayuda con Amor y Paz” (Help with Love and Peace) was held at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)- Home for Women and Children (Haven) located at San Roque. Supt. Natividad and his office staff shared breakfast and gave used clothes to its wards. It was his initiative to thank and share his blessings to the less fortunate women and children of our society.

DepEd Education Supervisor I and Special Event Coordinator Jane dela Torre reported that it was a noteworthy birthday celebration because she felt the faces of gratitude from the recipients. It was a happy day at DSWD’s Haven!

The second fold “Ayuda! Salva Vida” (Help Save Live),” was a real lifesaving bloodletting program held at the Division Office of Zamboanga in coordination with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) – Zamboanga City Chapter. A life of a school teacher was saved on that day as the teachers honored Pete’s birthday!

It was an unforgettable “bloody birthday” because a hospital confined teacher from Tetuan Central School, Florentina Chiong, was in dire need of blood that day. Glad that out of the 115 teachers from different public schools who dropped by and donated their blood, 55 bags of blood passed the rigid medical blood analysis.

Though 60 of the teacher donors were deferred due to low haemoglobin and hypertension (God heals them), the recipient Chiong had more than enough blood from her co-teachers. Thanks to the blood of Pete and his bloody teachers! Way to celebrate a birthday – add more life!

Cheers also to the amiable DepEd doctor, Dr. Mary Ruth Yanga and her medical staff, who spearheaded this bloody event.

Supt. Pete and the whole DepEd were elated with his birthday outcome and planned to conduct bloodletting every three months. Donating blood every three months is advisable and healthy. It cleanses the body from toxins and makes the blood donor more vigorous. This means more healthy teachers for DepEd, birthday boy Pete beamed.

To Pete, God bless you with good health and more meaningful birthdays to come!
