As a follow up of their successful collection of recycling aluminum cans as solar disinfection of water last year, the I Can Make A Difference advocacy group is embarking into another noble environmental and humanitarian project for the residents of Lakewood in Zamboanga del Sur.

The I CAN will be constructing a maternity lying center called The Halfway House using 1.5 PET plastic bottles as building blocks. Yes! Instead of hollow blocks, these disposable plastic bottles will be used. Saving not only in construction cost but also save our environment from the harmful effects of plastic bottles that don’t decay and is one of the prime causes of our environmental destruction.

In coordination with the Zamboanga Runner’s Club, they will have a fun run, The Bottle Run, on January 22, 2012 at Joaquin Enriquez Grandstand (for details call/text 0917-5543768 /0927-6669986/ 09154697517 or visit fb  This physical health event will help raise funds for the constructions costs of the halfway house. Primary collections have been going on with the involvement of the people of Lakewood under the supervision of the Department of Social Work Development.  They are starting to collect used 1.5 liter plastic bottles.

This is literally a life changing event, for participants to take a more proactive role in the expression of inter-community development; a chance for us to help people from other communities, especially pregnant women, to finally have access to basic medical services.

My hats off to I CAN for spearheading this simple, cost efficient, sustainable and environment friendly solution to the plight of our communities thru inter-sectoral participation of the community, the academe, the LGU, the NGO's and the private sectors.  Kudos to the prime movers of I CAN John Michael F. Dellariarte (Executive Director), Meryl Grace Agudelo (Operations Manager), Ronal Cszar Fabian Villano, Grachelle Andrea Bello Guevara,Don Johnson Santos, Zah Ditti, Ma. Lucsan Dellariarte, and Mark Anthony Lagnason as members of the I CAN board.
