Zamboanga City, Asia’s Latin City, goes diamond as it celebrates its 75th “Dia De Zamboanga” Charter Anniversary on February 26, 2012. This resulted after the Commonwealth Act No. 36 was signed into law on October 12, 1936 and our first set of Zamboangueño officials were installed into office on February 26, 1937.
Today, owing to the independence and flexibility that the Charter empowered our once-small city, we enjoy the credit of being the only highly-urbanized city in the Zamboanga Peninsula region and one of the most robust economies in the Philippine archipelago.
Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Jorge Domecq will be the keynote speaker and special guest of honor in this celebration.  Our city will renew and strengthen the relationships with Spain, considering that Zamboanga City and Zaragozza, Spain are sister cities based on a pact that both cities forged in 2008. Since the signing of the sisterhood agreement, various activities, including programs aimed to promote and preserve Chabacano, a Spanish derivative language, have been undertaken to strengthen our relationship.
The biggest activity will be the 2012 1st Zamboanga International Film Festival, an exhibit of selected Filipino and international films from February 25 to 27 at Mindpro Cinemas 1 and 3. Exciting part of this festival is the competition Zamboanga Short Film Festival with the theme “Kultura de Zamboanga”. This is being coordinated by the Zamboanga Tourism Office with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the Office of the President.
FDCP is the government-backed lead agency for film in the Philippines ensuring that the economic, cultural and educational aspects of film are effectively represented at home and abroad.
Another anticipated event is the annual Open Cheerdance Competition that will be held tomorrow, Feb. 22, at the Zamboanga City Coliseum, Tetuan. And the most coveted 2012 Zamboanga Local Achievers’ Awards will be announced on February 24 at a local hotel. This award will confer on individual Zamboangueños and local organizations that have attained exceptional achievements and services in various fields of endeavors.
Don’t miss this one. The Vamos A Comer Dinner Celebration at Plaza del Pilar on Feb. 23 and 24. Sumptuous Chabacano and other Spanish - inspired cuisines will be prepared by Zamboanga’s best restaurants for only P150 per plate from 5:30pm onwards. And while one is enjoying your dinner, be entertained with a variety of entertainment. Now that’s a big treat for our visitors, family and friends!
