The Naval Forces for Western Mindanao (NavForWem) in Calarian welcomed its new acting commander, Commodore (the naval equivalent of Brigadier General) Orwen J. Cruz last November 4.  He took over the post from Outgoing Acting Commander Brigadier General Eugenio N. Clemen of the Philippine Marines in a formal turn-over “Change of Ceremony” presided by Commodore Edgar L. Abogado AFP, Acting Chief of Naval Staff.

Brig. Gen. Clemen was commended and received a Military Merit Award for his meritorious and valuable service as the Acting Commander. He was instrumental in the peaceful negotiation and resolving differences between warring clans in Basilan that led to a harmonious relationship in this province. He also spearheaded the conduct of various Civil Military Operations in Zamboanga City and Basilan in his short term of duty despite limited manpower and resources. Together with other organizations, they were able to conduct medical and dental civic programs in Talabaan, Bolong, Upper Calarian, Talon-Talon, and in Tuburan, Basilan. Under his leadership, they provided medicines and conducted free minor surgical cases.

He also led in donating used clothing and dental supplies to about 500 indigent families at the Yakan Village in Upper Calarian and trash cans to the community leaders of in Bolong. An environmentalist, he  supervised the planting of 200 mahogany tree in Abong-Abong,  spearheaded coastal and clean up drive at RT Lim Boulevard, and planting of mangroves trees at the Sta. Cruz Island in coordination with the JCI Zamboanga-La Bella.

With the new commander, Commodore Cortez, the strong naval force will have a renewed direction of achieving peace not only in the sea but as well as in the dry land. Let’s give our full support to the new commander of the Philippine Navy in Western Mindanao!
