Today will be an exciting summer fun day for all those who will join and watch the “Fiesta
Engrande” (Grand Fiesta Celebration) by the Department of Tourism (DOT)-9 in coordination
with the Zamboanga City Tourism Office. This will also launch regionally the well-praised
DOT’s theme “More Fun in  the Philippines,” in Western Mindanao, according to active DOT
Regional Director Mary June Bugante.

“Fiesta Engrande’ with 3 different summer activities will surely bring out the Filipino summer
spirit of fun. The first event is a grand parade march, “Fiesta Parada,” from Plaza Pershing to
Paseo del Mar by different best city’s bands. It will bang and open officially the fun summer
celebration.

It will be followed by the “Juego de Antes” (old Filipino games) like tumbang preso, sipa, bagul,
Chinese garter, domino, sack race, shiantung, touch ball, etc. at Paseo del Mar. These Pinoy
games will show off to the techie kids of today what the child’s games their parents used to play.
Sad to note because of computer games and internet, most children nowadays don’t longer play
Filipino games that usually involve playing outside. Director Bugante said “juego” players will
be adults and children.

The most exciting competition will be the “Juego Amazing Race”- Zamboanga’s local
version of the famous international amazing race. Teams have to register to participate in this
special game.

The day will end with the “Bailes de Ayer” (Dance of the Yesteryears) that will be held inside
Fort Pilar Museum Courtyard in the evening. I remembered when I used to be a kid; people will
go to plaza for public dancing. And I am excited again to see (perhaps dance) with hit dance
music of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

The best part? It’s FREE! See you there.
Pictures shown here were taken during the Zamboanga City Kite Flying Contest last month
where Filipino games were sponsored by DOT.

(Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time
to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a
time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to
gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; ...”
Today is the best time to have FUN!
