All Zamboanguenos should be proud of our Great Sta. Cruz Island! It was featured by CNN website CNN Go (Local insights Global Experience) by Candice Lopez-Quimpo (www.cnngo.com/explorations/escape/philippines/philippines-best-beaches-and-islands) as one the Philippines’ Best Beaches and Islands (rank No. 9).

She wrote that picking a favorite beach in the Philippines is like trying to pick a favorite child - challenging but not impossible. With more than 7,000 islands edged by white sand buffering turquoise waters filled with some of the world's most diverse marine life, not everyone will agree on which one is best she said.

As she had described,  Zamboanga’s Sta. Cruz Island pink sand is a different experience to step on.  And I flound out it’s the only one in our country and only few around the world are blessed with this kind of seashore. The surrounding crystal clear blue and green water of the island is very enticing for swimming. For diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, they will forget the hours once they are submerged under the sea.  The sea floor is filled with diverse corals and colorful fishes.

I was there yesterday with a Canadian visiting lecturer, Nicholas “Nick” Luff, and two local friends Oliver Ong and Mau Bello. Luff just concluded his 3-day seminar about adapting global trends for an inclusive business and partnership at Garden orchid Hotel. He said Sta. Cruz Island has a great potential for development. What is needed, he said, is a good partnership between the government and private corporations to build appropriate infrastructures to attract more tourists. What is important too, he emphasized; there must be a balance of progress and development with taking good care of the environment.

There is now regular ferry boats that can bring people from Paseo del Mar to Sta Cruz Island daily. The boat rental is P1,000 good for 10 persons (back and forth). To make your booking reservation, one must contact the Department of Tourist Office at Lantaka Hotel. The cottage rental is affordable only about P100 and entrance fee is P20.

Set your adventure sight at Sta. Cruz Island this summer!

1 Chronicles 16:8. “Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.” Thank you, Lord, for Sta, Cruz Island!
