If you’re going to Davao City and looking for the best place to stay for vacation, I do recommend La Vida Orchard Resort at Barangay Catagman in the beautiful Island Garden City of Samal. I was there recently upon the invitation of the resort management to experience luxury at an affordable place.

Samal Island, with its many natural environmental resources and friendly people, is becoming a must visit tourist destination in Davao City.  Tourist industry is booming with foreign tourists arriving by hordes from different countries every month in this island. Different resorts are sprouting everywhere to cater them.

One of the top choice resorts among local as well as foreign tourist is the La Vida Orchard Resort because of its relaxing ambiance, fully surrounded by fruit trees and flowering flowers. The crystal clear beach of Samal Island is less than 5 minutes walk from the resort site where one can dive in the sea even midnight without fear. The architectural design of the place awes people as it has wonderfully combined Filipino ingenuity and artistry using native materials. Since the place has no restaurant, delicious and budget priced Filipino home cooked meals are prepared and cooked upon order. Superb!

La Vida’s room rate? As low as P300 (non-aircon) cottage room good for 2 while the air-con room is only P900 for 2 pax. The rooms are nicely decorated, clean, and classy. Bathrooms smell fresh and are well-maintained. The room rates are the lowest in this enchanting island! We no longer have to spend a fortune for a vacation.

It is also just a 20-minute ride to the famous Maxima Giant Tarpaulin Water Slide and the awesome cascading Hagimit Waterfalls. Another must-visit attraction is the Monfort Bat Cave (25-minute ride from La Vida), home of the largest colony of fruit bats (Rosettus Aplexicaudatus) worldwide estimated to be about 1.8 million in population. It was cited and recognized as a nature wonder by the Guinness Book of Records.

In my estimate, La Vida is only about 30 minutes from Davao City where I first took a public Ro-Ro (Roll On-Roll Off) bus at Magsaysay Park, Davao City (cost of bus trip is P25 non-aircon or P45 for aircon bus) to Samal Island. No entrance fee to the island – it’s free! The tricycle ride cost from Catagman bus terminal to La Vida is only P15.

According to resort manager, Niño Sepulveda, the resort was built primarily to cater tourists who want to spend money wisely.  Their guests can use their money, instead, in exploring the wonders of the island Niño said.

La Vida is also ideal for small conventions, meetings, and special functions. It has a function hall that can accommodate 150 people where government and private events are being held there now and then. Romantic weddings, memorable debuts, and fun birthday parties are being booked in advanced.
