Treat yourself, your family and friends to a new summer adventure this summer of 2013. Enjoy the different activities line up in the on-going Summer Peace Festival 2013 (SPF13) at Vista del Mar. Launched last week, April 13, this event aims to create for Zamboanga City as a new summer destination for local tourists and foreigners.

Discover, experience and learn new things like yoga and skim boarding (“new way of beach surfing”), hear and sing with foreign and top local singers, enjoy eating food cooked and served by some of our country’s top Chefs, are some of these activities.

Spearheaded by Good Karma Productions, Muni Productions and Ministry of Mushrooms, Inc., there will be two simultaneous summer events that will be held in Northern Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro City “SPF13 Luna Musikalawaig”) and Western Mindanao (Zamboanga City “SPF13 Paz Musika del Mar”). It will bring together local tradition and contemporary art in the name of peace, in harmony with nature, in celebration of its diverse culture and people. The SPF13 founders wish to spread and promote Mindanao's art, culture and eco-tourism.

Without inner peace, it is really difficult for people to live in harmony with others. Here, SPF13 will offer ways to achieve that through food and activities (music, art, tourism, workshops, and community services) designed to bring inner calmness and raise creativity and compassion. The introduction of various styles of yoga to Zamboanga will be made possible through Rebecca de Villa of Stillpoint Yoga Manila (Ashtanga) and Will Tan of Yogi Yoga (Vinyasa) and Gino Scarella of BikramGreenhills (Bikram).Riva Galvez-Tan founder of Natural Shelf will raise food awareness through a lecture on the benefits of organic food found in Mindanao, while sparkleLAB, design studio + toy factory + innovation lab will offer workshops for kids, teens and adults to encourage them to recycle, tinker, create and innovate for a better, greener world.

Surrounding it, there will be a variety of workshops selected and designed to inspire a positive change in all participants. In collaboration with the Hineleban Foundation and the LBC Foundation, SPF13 will tackle sustainable reforestation, coastal clean-ups, and mangrove reforestation advocacies. This year, the group will focus on rehabilitating parts of Mt. Kitanglad, which provides 90 percent of Mindanao’s drinking water. During the festival, SPF13 will launch “Why Reforest Video and How You Can Be Involved” videos.

Ministry of Mushrooms (MoM) will be setting up a Summer Food Fair and Weekend Market at Vista del Mar Resort, where seven of the country’s most progressive chefs will partner with some of Zamboanga’s most well-known food establishments and educational institutions to come up with special dishes and food products to be showcased at the food fair and concert.

Try skim boarding and bring back an appreciation for the sea, whose bounty has nourished Zamboangeños for centuries. Participants can also look forward to enjoying Zamboanga City’s rich history through guided walking tours of the city. They can ignite their taste buds through a food tour that highlights exotic cuisine and Latin-influenced favorites, bask in the sun on the pink sands of Sta. Cruz Island, and sign up for snorkeling and diving to explore the rich marine sea of Zamboanga’s waters. They can make new friends and have a great time enjoying the city’s bustling nightlife through the Zambar Crawl.

The culminating event, “SPF13 PAZ Musica del Mar,” on April 30 will bring together people from all races, religions, political factions, and social standings to celebrate peace through the universal language of music. SPF 13 will mark the first visit of Swedish national, SiriSvegler and German born, Thomas Walter to the Philippines.

Accompanied by the talented Isa Tabasuares, the trio will perform their own brand of jazz, which

combines rock, blues and pop influences. MushProject, a DJ from Barcelona, makes the trip from Manila to Zamboanga to share his original electronica tracks, which have gained popularity in the underground music scene. He will be joined by experimental soul and funk-reel band Sinyma, world music heavy weights Humanfolk, the talented groove band, Steady Machine, and Nanay Mo, a band so rock and roll the power went out after their first song last year in Luna Musika Lawaig I. Cebuano solo artist, Kate Torralba brings her piano pop performances to Mindanao shores while Fantuzzi, the man Newsweek Magazine put on their cover for the Woodstock issue, enlightens us with his peaceful rhythms.
