Good-looking ADZU student, 19 years old Paolo Onesa, eldest son of Ariel and Arlene Onesa made it to the first round elimination of the biggest and most exciting talent nationwide search of ABS-CBN’s The Voice last Saturday, July 6. Rock superstar Bamboo chose him within seconds after Paolo sang a few lyric lines of “Yakap Sa Dilim”.

Bamboo even stopped International Hiphop Sensation Black Eyed Peas'- APL DE AP from turning around and shouted “Don’t do it, don’t do it” so Paolo will be one of his (Bamboo) protégées. Broadway Diva, LeahSalonga, fell in love with Paolo’s voice and was “intrigued” if Paolo has ever fell in love the way of the lyrics message says it. Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo commented that she heard the voice of Bamboo in Paolo and knew that they (Bamboo and Paolo) will make a great team. All of them agreed, Paolo has the making of being The Voice of the Philippines.

These great singers and performers, Bamboo, Apl De Ap, Lea, and Sarah are the judges/coaches who will handpicked the Philippine’s first grand winner for The Voice under the show’s slogan “Pangarapang Puhunan, Bosesang Labanan”. This non-discriminatory reality singing talent search that that started in Holland is now in more than 40 countries to date. The contestant’s gender, age, economic status or life story does not matter. It is the quality of the voice and excellent performance that will determine who will be the grand Voice champion.

Talented Filipino artists for the first edition of Philippine’s The Voice were selected nationwide and around the globe. They underwent several phases of the competition starting off with “The Blind Auditions”. Here, the coaches choose, form, and complete their respective teams. At this first stage of the auditions, artists sing while the coaches are seated with their backs turned against them, if the coaches like what they hear, they press the red button and their seats turn to face the artist.

When a coach turns, the artist automatically goes to his or her team; but when two or more coaches turn- the artist will get the power to pick which coach or team he or she wants to join. This is the delightful dilemma when 2, 3 or all 4 coaches will turn around.  The artist must choose only one who will be his or her mentor. In Paolo’s case, Bamboo picked him up and will train him to be a Voice champion.

When all teams are complete, they will move to the next level of the competition- “The Battle Round”. Here, members of each team are paired to out-sing each other at the stage. Their respective coaches will decide who goes home; who will stay and move on to compete at the Live Shows.Artists still in running will compete and out-best each other for the chance to win the Voice of the Philippines.

If Paolo can hang on until the final selection, I am sure Zamboanga City will keep glue to their TV every Saturday at 9:00pm after Maalaala Mo Kaya , and on Sundays at 8:15pm after Rated K.  Let’s cheer and pray that Paolo’s talent will shine.
