Amidst this traumatic siege of Zamboanga City, there’s good news that we can be proud of.  Local civic leader Dr. Anton Lim and his family have been named as one of the 2013 Jollibee Family Values Award (JFVA)! Now on its third year, the JFVA pays tribute to five (5) exemplary families nationwide who embody the cherished Filipino values and serve as an inspiration to others through their good deeds.  It’s a double feat for Zamboanga City as last year another Zamboagueno Family, the Cardente Family, also received the same honor that is on its 3rd year of search.

Through a forum entitled “Growing up with a Purpose: Social Awareness Begins in Every Pinoy Home”, the 3rd JFVA was launched in Manila last June. The award aims to further encourage everyone to cherish the real sense of family and to continue to uphold these treasured Filipino family values. It recognizes Filipino families who have gone out of their way to help other people in their communities according to Jollibee Vice President for Marketing Harvey Ong. “Kindheartedness, generosity, and love for others—these are just some of the qualities that make many Filipino families stand out from the rest,” Ong said. The JFVA is our primary vehicle to inspire even more families to make a difference.

I am will write all the details what Dr. Anton Lim has been doing for our city. The whole page of Pep Talk is not enough. What I can say, he has been in almost all the tragedies happenings not only in our city but also in other places as a Rotarian, Tzu Chi Zamboanga coordinator, and Yellow Boat Foundation founder among others. I have seen his wife Joyce and son in several of these occasions helping him out. A successful veterinarian, Dr. Lim takes off from his clinic to personally assist people in crisis. Since day one (1) of Zamboanga siege, he has been personally and supervising packing rice, food, clothing, etc. while soliciting help from his friends and other organizations. (I will write more details about his good deeds after he has received his JFVA Award.)

The 3rd JFVA Board of Judges is composed of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) secretary Dinky Soliman; Oversease Workers Welfare Association (OWWA) Administrator Carmelita Dimzon;  Jollibee Group Foundation president Grace A. Tan Caktiong; TV host Christine Jacob-Sandejas; Jollibee Foods Corporation Country HR head Theresa Jotie; Jollibee Vice President for Marketing Harvey Ong; broadcast journalist Karen Davila, parenting; Chaplain and Chair of the Management Committee for Public Service Integration of ABS-CBN Fr. Tito Caluag S.J.; Love Institute Parenting & Relationship Consultant Maribel Sison-Dionisio; Coca-Cola Corporation Public Relations and Communications Director Atty. Adel Tamano; and Award-winning motivational and inspirational speaker Francis Kong.

The judges also stressed the importance of leading by example. "Words are important but what's important is what you do," said Atty. Tamano. "I'm bothered by parents who tell their children to be kind but you see how they treat others. You can only teach by what you do," he shared. Francis Kong added that "as my kids grow older, we expose them more. They may not believe 100 percent in what we say but they believe 100 percent in what they see."

This year’s five winning families will each receive a cash prize of P100,000, a trophy designed by renowned brass sculptor Michael Cacnio, a 32” Sony Bravia LCD TV, and Jollibee gift certificates plus the distinction of being included in the roster of Jollibee Family Values Awards winners. Dr. Anton said that the prize money will be used for educational support for Layag-Layag.

May there be more like him during these times of woes.
