World Teachers' Day commemorates teachers every October 5th of the year worldwide. Since its inception on 1994, this day aim to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by our beloved teachers. According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.

Unfortunately the planned celebration and honoring of Zamboanga teachers this day, World Teacher’s Day, has been re-scheduled by DepEd (Department of Education) Zamboanga Supervisor Pete Natividad.. Even though plan activities have been changed in honoring our local teachers, Pep Talk gives tributes to them who since Day 1 of the Zamboanga City have been working tirelessly to save and rebuild our city’s education system to normalcy.

Their bigger task now is to conduct psychological psychological first aid (PFA) for students to reduce initial distress caused by the conflict. DepEd Undersecretary for Regional Operations Rizalino Rivera said in an interview said the re-opening of the classes will not be “regular” the first few days. “Learner-centered tayo sa DepEd. Kung mag-formal (classes), hindi papasok yun (sa ulo nila) kasi yung mga bata, and iba diyan tuliro pa. So kailangan, i-ease in natin sila sa regular learning modes.” (DepEd is learner-centered. If we start formal classes, they won’t understand anything because some of these kids are still in shock. We need to ease them into the regular learning modes.)
Sharing today pictures of DepEd-Zamboanga joining the commemoration held at Western Mindanao Command Center that honored fallen soldiers and police force of the Zamboanga Crisis.
Teachers are our modern heroes. Let’s honor them.
