Last October 6, different sectors in Tawi-Tawi had a fun run, “Run for Zamboanga: Dagan Kalna' Sambuwangan”, to raise charity funds and to show love for Zamboanga City. Spearheaded by Mindanao State University (MSU) Tawi-Tawi Alumni Association, a total of 1,454 registered runners participated and had raised over P250,000 fund,  according to MSU Alumni Director Basil Villacortes Sali. It was supported by Tawi-Tawi Governoer Nurbert Sahali. To make the event more fun, “Hataw Tawi-Tawi,” a morning dance aerobics  was led by the employees of the provincial capitol.

Tawi-Tawi, known as the “Seaweed Capital of the Philippines” is the major producer of agar-agar in our country which are in demand around the world. Agriculture and fishing are also the leading source of livelihood for the people of the province. Copra is the top agricultural product of the province, followed by root crops, fruits and vegetables. Tawi-Tawi is one of our city’s important economic allies in this region. They do their business transaction, send their children for higher education, shopping and recreation, source out and buys most of their products in Zamboanga City.

I have been to Tawi-Tawi during my stint in the pharmaceutical days. It has a potential to be one of the tourism destinations of our country. Crystal clear white sandy beach that can beat Boracay prestige and abundance of sea foods are among its attractions. Tourists will enjoy scuba diving, deep sea swimming, and snorkeling there.

The people of Tawi-Tawi are friendly and peace loving. Though security is a concern of local government officials, I guess with the full support of the national government and the cooperation of all private sectors, Tawi-Tawi can be the next biggest tourism haven in the Philippines.
