I have lost count already the numerous national and international awards and recognitions Zamboanga City’s good-hearted civic leader Dr. Anton “Dok Anton” Lim have received so far from different organizations. But the latest award that he got from UP (University of the Philippines) College of Veterinary Medicine as Most Outstanding Alumni 2013 of their college is the one the one he is proudest of. Maybe never in his wildest dream that he hoped for it; he felt overjoyed that his beloved Alumni has honored him. Who wouldn’t when it could be that there are also more other deserving alumni in his batch that deserves it too. And this is the 25th Silver Homecoming of their college. It was a grand affair last October 9 and 10 at his university.

It was unfortunate that on the awarding day, Dok Anton was not able to receive this prestigious award because flights from Zamboanga Airport were cancelled due to the flooded runway. I hope the awarding committee can make a special arrangement how it can be given to him. Perhaps it can be held here together with all UP alumni of our city. I am sure WMSU President Dr. Milabel Ho can help arrange it.

I remember years back when Dok Anton received his Rotary Paul Harris International Award for Service, his close friend Oliver Ong asked me to write about it without informing Dok Anton.  Knowing Dok Anton way back as a friend, he is a very humble person and will shy away from publicity if he can. He might prevent me from doing my first write up about him. But later I explain to Dok Anton that Pep Talk is not about personalities (this is not a showbiz column – getting into his personal life). Pep Talk, I said, aims to inspire readers with the hope to encourage them to do the same or simply be proud that a fellow Zamboangueño like him is setting a good example especially for the youth.

In all the humanitarian projects he has been involved; Dok Anton does not want to get all the credits to himself. He always acknowledges the organizations he is with like Tzu Chi Foundation, Rotary Club of Zamboanga City, and the Yellow Boat Hope of Foundation among others. Willing volunteers are there to assist him. Donors and supporters give when he asked. Dok Anton has built a credibility and reputation that they appreciate and have high regards of him.

To his UP Alma Mater, Dok Anton is grateful that he learned strong love and service to country in this institution. He is sharing his Alumni award to Dr. Gregorio Goloyugo who inspired him to become a Veterinarian and who convinced his parents to allow him to study at UP (they were afraid Dok Anton would become a communist, hehehe). He is thankful too to to Dean Salvador Escudero III (father of Sen. Chiz Escudero) for taking him under his wings as promised to his parents. He is grateful also to Dr. Joey Molina and Dr. Virgilio Esguerra who reminded him all throughout his college life that his tuition was paid for by the sweat and tears of farmers and that they should always know how to repay back.

Dok Anton is also thankful to UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity for teaching him to apply Truth and Justice, and for imbibing the true meaning of “Alay Sa Sambayan” with marks of excellence in all endeavors.  He is grateful above all to God and his parents. Like him, I am excited to see him holding up his UP Oblation Trophy.
Congrats, Dr. Anton!
