Happier days are here again – By Gems believes PDF Print E-mail

All of us were badly affected in one way or another when the Zamboanga siege happened, and more so for some barangays that were flooded days after. One of the seriously hit sectors is the local business industry especially those located at the center of the city. It was lost sales for more than a month. And it’s back to zero in conflict areas whose business establishments were razed to the ground by fire. But business in Zamboanga City has to rev up to keep life moving.

Greatly shaken during those trying times was By Gems Party Kingdom (BGPK), our city’s premiere provider of sculptured balloons, mascots, food carts, magicians, party hosts, other party needs and accessories. It got zero sales and had cancelled bookings when the siege happened. No one wanted to celebrate during the crisis.

Though it was an unfortunate incident, BGPK took the opportunity to assess their business position and planned how to expand more when the good times come in.  BGPK also went to evacuation centers to perform for free bringing along their party hosts, mascots, magician, and ventriloquist to the delight of the children and adults for more than 2 hours. They also held fun games and gave free toys sending messages of thanksgiving, love and hope. It was one way to ease tension and de-stress the evacuees, according to BGPK CEO Fred Covarrubias. I went there, saw the smiles and heard the laughter of the evacuees.

The BGPK performers were paid by BGPK Management during these free events as they (the performers) were also affected too and lost income. I learned BGPK staff also received their salaries though there were no business sales for the company. It was a show of confidence and trusts that in due time everything will resume, Covarrubias explained when I commented “hindi ba lugi?”

BGPK Balloon Stylist Gemma Covarrubias was able to create too a bridal bouquet of flowers during those low times. The “rest of the forced vacation” gave her to re-energize her creativity, she said with a smile. Above all, BGPK gives all the glory and honor to God for keeping them safe from harm during those trying times of dangers, Fred and Gemma jointly expressed. They praise God for the BGPK 4th branch opening in Zamboanga City on December 2 (branches are at Sta. Maria, Astoria Hotel, and Ipil, Sibugay).

Let’s continue to pray and support Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar for wisdom, guidance, and strength physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I am confident our city’s economy will bounce back fast when consumers start buying again, old investors will not back out and new investors will still come in. Tourism definitely was hit the hardest. But I trust Regional Director Mary June Bugante of the Department of Tourism and Zamboanga City Tourism Officer Sarita Hernandez has contingency plans to assure local and foreign tourists not to fear and to come enjoy the splendors of Zamboanga Hermosa.
Happier days for Zamboanga City are coming.
