Sport good news today! 5’11” Zamboangueño basketball player Darwin Cordero, who used to be the star collegiate player of Southern City Colleges (SCC), is now set to join the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Rookie Draft on November 3. He is said to be the best player of his generation of Zamboanga City.

Basketball fanatics compare Cordero often as Zamboanga City’s Russell Westbrook of the Oklahama Thunder or Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls. At his towering height, he can sky high for a thunderous slam. As a point guard, he was displaying surprising strength, quiet confidence and solid composure at the Alaska Aces practices held recently at the Gatorade Hoopz Center, Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong. He also displayed a deft shooting touch as reported.

Cordero was named to Mythical Five in a basketball tournament organized by boxing idol Manny Pacquiao, along with PBA import Jamel Cornely. He has also played for Marikina Deleague to sharpen his skills in this sport.

SCC president Edwin Caliolio is full support to his athletic players since he took the helm of the school.  SCC has been producing lately topnotch basketball players like former UAAP MVP RR Garcia, brothers Chico and Garvo Lanete, Globalport’s Rudy Lingganay, National University’s Robin Rono and Choi Ignacio. These players brings pride to SCC coach Ednie Morones said, mentioning that Cordero is the “most talented” player in Zamboanga  City to date.  During the 2008 Private School Athletic Association (PRISAA) Meet, Cordero was named as the Most Valuable Player after leading his school to championship against University of Mindanao-Davao.

Zamboangueño businessman and sportsman Junnie Navarro, who is now based in Manila, is  cheering for Cordero all out just what he has been doing for our local basketball players who are playing in Metro Manila top schools and basketball teams presently. Navarro helped organized the successful Smart Friendly Ayuda Zamboanga Basketball Game that raised  funds for the Zamboanga siege.

Cordero can be our next basketball superstar if given the chance, Navarro believes. Let’s pray and root for Cordero as he brings the name of Zamboanga City in the world arena of basketball next year.
