Basketball fans of Zamboanga City will surely get excited watching the next PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) season. Zamboangueño 5’10” basketball player Darwin Cordero was picked by the Barako Bulls at the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft last November 3, 2013 in Robinsons Place Manila.

Only 44 were chosen by the different professional basketball teams from 85 hopeful basketball players; Cordero was chosen by Barako Bulls of Photkina Marketing Corporation. The old name of the team was Red Bull Barako. Among those who appeared to give Cordero moral support was fellow Zamboangueño and Manila-based businessman Junie Navarro. He said Cordero is a total basketball package--one who can shoot, defend, and slash. And he believes that his “kababayan” has the ability to be a great basketball player someday.

Though Cordeo is not popular in Metro Manila as he has not played for UAAP or NCAA, but he gained the admiration of fellow basketball players.  Cordero is compared to Oklahoma Thunder’s Russel Westbrook for his ability to float and slam dunk. He plays beyond his height as he can easily slam the ball against taller opponents. He played for Team Pacquiao for the last two years wherein the eight time world boxing record holder Manny Pacquiao is awed with Cordero’s basketball skills.

Cordero is from Tumaga, Zamboanga City and was a collegiate basketball player of Southern City Colleges. He is grateful that he made it to the PBA and will do his bet to lift up the name of Zamboanga City in the basketball arena.

Psalm 1:2-4. “But they in doing everything the Lord wants; day and night they think about his law. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper.”
