I missed the early morning formal memorial ceremony, “Tribute to Heroes,” of the Zamboanga City Government last Monday, December 2, 2013, at the Rizal Monument in front of Zamboanga City Hall. But I paid my respect when I dropped by early in the evening.

I was moved just reading the names of the 38 people who lost their lives (I bet you will too). From military men to civilians, men and women, young and old, it pinched my heart as I can feel how their families and loved ones will miss them this Christmas and the years to come. And I hope justice will be served so that this unfortunate incident will not be repeated again.

For those who survived, those who secured our city, the combined military and police forces from national and local agencies including local firemen, different religious and civilian leaders from the private sectors, international and local donors, national and local government officials especially Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar, thank you for protecting and standing firm to the cause of upholding the stand, “One Flag, One Nation, One Zamboanga,” for 23 days.

The event has defined the true character of a Zamboangueño, who despite the diversity of religion, culture and ideology are united in their conviction for the love of our city and our country.

Muchas Gracias, Magsukul, Thank you for saving our city.  Time to rebuild a better Zamboanga City.

Proverbs 10:12. “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offense.” A psalm of Solomon tells us, “Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good” (Psalm 127:1 NLT). Let’s offer Zamboanga City to God with love.
