When Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar turn-on the Christmas lights at City Hall and for Plaza Pershing last Monday evening, it officially ushers the Christmas Season in our city. Aside it is her first Christmas as our Mayor; this holiday is more meaningful and significant for all Zamboagueños after we suffered the dreaded 23-day Zamboanga City siege. Let's celebrate with hope and prayers in our hearts.

The Star of Hope or “Estrellas de Esperanza” at the city hall edifice takes center stage in this year’s celebration of “Pascua na Zamboanga.” Its light symbolically gives optimism, hope and faith to all of us. Mayor Beng Climaco in a press release declared that this star embodies the Zamboangueño families’ character of resiliency and strength amidst trials and adversities. She said the City has gone through a lot over the past months but people remain hopeful and strong.

After a Holy Mass at the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral and a parade “Parada del las Estrellas de Ezperanza,” our city government officials and employees hang little stars in three Christmas trees of City Hall. A short Christmas of songs and dance followed after Mayor Beng declared Christmas is in Zamboanga City and encouraging everyone to celebrate with the theme “Build Back Better Un Familia Zamboangueño.” I was with my parents, Danny and Tita Corteza, who enjoyed the Zamboanga Christmas opening. Mom admired the two energetic and young program hosts Christian Olasiman and Mark Saavedra that night.

Let’s welcome our families, friends, guests, and tourists to the different Christmas activities lined up this year in our city. They are : Regatta de Esperanza of the Department of Tourist at Paseo del Mar (vinta sailing throughout the month of December and January); Gulucinas y Comida de Pascua (Dec. 2 – 23), the City Government Christmas Gathering with Bobby Quitain and the City Government Service Awarding Ceremonies (Dec. 6), ABS-CBN’s Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na (Dec. 6), World Aids Day Celebration (Dec. 6), Weekend Christmas Fair (Dec. 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, and 28-29), Best Belen Competition (Dec. 13), Arco de Pascua (Dec. 15 – 17), Mascota de Zamboanga (Dec. 17), and the Canciones de Pascua (Dec. 18). Psalm 23:1-4. “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul;He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
