The most coveted award of the City of Zamboanga was held last February 26 at Garden Orchid Hotel. Top men and women including organizations of Asia’s Latin City were honored in the 2011 Zamboanga Achievers Award in commemoration of the 74th Dia De Zamboanga Celebration.

Topping the award is socio-civic leader Atty. Arsenio “Jun” Gonzalez Jr. He was named as this year’ Orgullo de Zamboanga Premiar – this is the highest award given to people whose leadership and achievements are worth emulating and is an inspiration to others. He was cited for his invaluable services and unparalleled contribution to the growth and development of the City of Zamboanga and the region.

His apolitical involvement with government agencies and public offices has been instrumental to the realization of various accomplishments which include, among others, the enactment of the Traffic Code of Zamboanga and the Investment Incentive Code of 2004.His untiring devotion to public service is manifested by his inestimable participation, then and now, to various movements and organizations which have instituted positive changes in the society.

For community service, another socio-civic leader, Dr. Anton Mari H. Lim, was honored with the Community Service Award. This award cited his exemplary service and dedication to public service.  His stewardship in the Tzu Chi foundation has inspired him to constantly reach out and offer assistance to indigent beneficiaries through the various medical and dental missions as well as relief- giving operations conducted in times of calamities and emergencies.

Top, respected and well-loved medical practitioner, Dr. Edwina Cabato, was named as the top Public Servant for her untiring dedication and exemplary services to the people of Zamboanga in the field of Medicine. This is the same citations why she was named as the Outstanding Physician of the Zamboanga City Medical Society and the Bronze Medallion Awardee of the Philippine Red Cross last year.

City Treasurer Soledad Li was awarded the City Government Award for her remarkable contribution to the City Government Service in the field of revenue collection. Her notable performance as City Treasurer since 2002 has greatly contributed to the sound fiscal economy of the City of Zamboanga and earned her the recognition of being the 2010 Top Performer in Local Treasury Service conferred by the Department of Finance.

Nestor Necessito, Leo RM Estrella and TV Patrol Chabacano received the Mayor’s Award. Necesito was named as an outstanding student leader that earned him the title as one of the Top Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines in 2010. Estrella was commended for his honesty, sincerity and integrity for returning to a school principal of Vitali National High School important documents and checks amounting to P811,265. 00. These constituted the salaries of teachers and remittances to the Department of Education, that were left in his tricycle.

TV Patrol Chavacano was acknowledged for its commendable delivery of public service in the name of accurate, fair and balanced newscasting and its invaluable contribution to the promotion and preservation of the Chabacano language.

WMSU Professor Norma C. Conti deserves to receive the award in Culture and Arts for her exemplary contribution in the preservation and promotion of the culture of Zamboanga through her timeless Chabacano Song Compositions. Her masterpieces in music have greatly influenced the Zamboangueños of all generations to love and appreciate Chabacano music more.

Businessman Al Hassan Hassiman is the Top Individual Taxpayer awardee. This award is given in grateful recognition and acknowledgement of his contribution to the coffers of the City Government as the top individual taxpayer for 2010. ZC Mega Shop-O-Rama for three consecutive years– 2008, 2009 and 2010, is the Top Corporate Payer of our city.

Posthumous awards were given to Talisayan Teacher Lorna Pulalon who exemplified love and dedication to the teaching profession when she protected her students last  October 22, 2010 from an attack of an ex-convict,  and to Police Officer 1 (PO1) Douglas Pineda who was killed while trying to respond to a holdup incident along Nuñez St. last November 24, 2010. They were cited for their heroism in giving up their lives for others.


A leader is a person of integrity. In everything set them as an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned. (Titus 2:7-8)
