Three of the Zamboanga City Judo Players placed 5th in their respective weight categories in the prestigious Hong Kong International Judo Tournament 2011 held at the Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre, Kowloon, Hong Kong (China) last March 5-6, 2011. They are SEAGAMES medallist John Baylon, and WMSU (Western Midnanao State University) players Alvin Mendoza and Tracy Agramon.

Thirteen countries led by powerhouse Japan, Korea, China, New Zealand and Mongolia participated in this annual event organized by the Judo Association of Hong Kong, China. The Philippine Team was made up of 20 athletes and 6 delegation officials. Five of the players and three officials came from Zamboanga City. They joined selected judo athletes from the University of the East, University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and the Philippine National Judo Team, and were billeted at the posh L’Hotel Nina Et Convention Centre, Kowloon.

The President of the Philippine Judo Federation (PJF) Dave F. Carter designated WMSU Prof. Dr. Ricardo Danilo E. Corteza (the present Interim President of the Zamboanga City Judo Association and former PJF Education and Coaching Director) as Team Leader and Head Coach of the Philippine Men’s Judo Team, while WMSU Assistant Professor and an IJF Class B Licensed International Referee in the Philippines Alamjavier S. Indanan as the country’s’ referee representative.

The other Zamboangueño players in the team were John Ramon Quin III and Frederick Tormon. Also with the Zamboanga delegates was Zamboanga City Councilor Percival Ramos who acted as the city government delegated official. Except for Baylon, the rest of the Zamboanga players are WMSU students/alumni and members of the WMSU Python Judo Club. Prior to this trip, Dr. Corteza headed the delegation of the Philippine Team at the Asia Junior Sports Exchange Games last August 27-29, 2010 in Tokyo Japan.

The trip of the 8-men Zamboanga Judo Team is made possible through the support of Zamboanga City officials and benefactors headed by City Mayor Celso Lobregat, Congressman Erbie Fabian, WMSU President Dr. Grace Rebollos, City Councilor Percival Ramos, Atty. & Mrs. Arsenio Gonzales Jr., Engr. Ben Ramos of BenRam Construction, Mr. Ceferino Go, US-based and former SEAGAMES Silver Medallist Alqadir Ekong, former City Mayor Vinnie Atilano, Dr. Milabel Ho and the WMSU-RDE staff, Montessori De Zamboanga and PJF Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Chapter President Atty. Kim Elago.

Because of the WMSU players’ outstanding performances (their first time to participate in an international event), judo officials from Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau and Taiwan Judo Federations were impressed and extended to Zamboanga City an invitation to participate in their respective tournaments beginning this year.

Indanan is set to depart on April 3-9, 2011 for Abu Dhabi to officiate in the prestigious Asian Junior Judo Championships while Dr. Corteza is scheduled to leave for Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam this June to take his Judo Union of Asia (JUA) International Licensure Examination for Class A Referee.
