Ateneo de Zamboanga University commemorated National Arts Month last February with an art exhibit entitled “Paglawig: Sailing for Peace.” It opened last February 14 and is featuring eight outstanding local artists from Zamboanga del Sur. Their art works can be viewed at the ADZU Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago.

The artists are Jose Armin S. Virata, Alex J. Amores, Doroteo C. Alum Jr., Alexis R. Almira, Renante Aninon, Mark Earl John Cabatuan, Aileen Cabatuan, and Tomas Cabatuan Jr. They are teachers from Poblacion Tabina, Zamboanga del Sur, who formed on 2011 an artist group named “Tabina Artist Organization.”  Their masterpieces has been featured by Cagayan de Oro Capitol University, Kabasalan Art Gallery, Kalinawa Arts Foundation, and Philippine Visual Arts Festival among others.

“Paglawig” is a Bisaya word that means navigate, cruise, voyage, or sail.  The “Paglawig” exhibit of painting and sculptures depicts the artist’s expression of promoting peace and harmony according to one of the artists Tomas “Rocky” Cabatuan. Fellow artist Doroteo Alum explained further that they are depicting how peace is related to human and his environment.

ADZU professor and an artist herself, Sandra A. Jamiro, welcomed the guests after the ribbon cutting and opening prayer by Twienamy Campos.  It was followed with the presentation of the artists by Chester Mato, a representative from the Western Mindanao of the National Committee on Visual Arts and National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Among the guest artists spotted were Ezercasim Dante Sanchez, Francis Lorenzo, and Teofilo Torino.

The art gallery of ADZU is hosting art exhibits, usually five times every year, to support art master pieces of local artists of Western Mindanao. ADZU professor Marco Alfino “Kiko”Miranda was the master of the exhibit ceremony whom I learned will be the in-coming director of the gallery. Congrats, Kiko!
