Miss Zamboanga City 2013 Margie Alatan is our city’s bet for the coveted Miss Philippines-Earth 2014. This is an annual beauty and brain search for the most beautiful and environmentally-friendly woman in the Philippines. The winner will serve as the Ambassador to environmental protection campaigns in the country, and represent the Philippines to one of the biggest international beauty competitions - the Miss Earth Pageant with other girls from different countries all over the world.

Carousel Productions Inc., the local franchise holder of Miss Philippines-Eartn, decided to reinvent and improve the concept of beauty competitions for the new millennium. Because many people admire and aspire to be a beauty queen, it believed beauty queens would be a good and effective advocate of worthy causes. This beauty raison d’etre is to have its candidates and winners actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the protection of Mother Earth.

On its second year, Miss Zamboanga April Rose Lim Perez won the title in 2002. She is the daughter of my good friend Myrna Lim who is now based in Cagayan de Oro City and happily married to a doctor. Last year, Miss Zamboanga City  Nancy Leonard won the title Miss Philippines-Water.

Here’s the official interview with Miss Alatan (http://www.missphilippines-earth.com/candidate-zamboanga.php).
Describe your childhood/growing years (8-13 years old)
I have a care-free childhood. I have a very boyish personality by the way I dress, speak, and act. I became part of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines and a Taekwondo player during my elementary years. I have been privileged to explore places being an athlete and a representative of my city for the national level. I remember I became Princess of Charity when I was in grade 3. When I was in grade 6, I joined the Buwan ng Wika pageant in my school which I consider as my first pageant and I won first runner-up. I am the usual class representative because of my height.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
I have learned a lot during my growing years because I became aware of my surroundings being a member of the Girl Scout of the Philippines and as a Taekwondo player. I was exposed and trained to respect everyone, survive by living away from my parents, preserve and protect the environment, be disciplined, and most of all being responsible and accountable as an individual and citizen of the country.

Most memorable moment
I cherish is when I am crowned as Miss Zamboanga. I have never expected that a simple girl, living a simple life could be Miss Zamboanga. Despite the catastrophes and trials that Zamboanga City had been through─ the pressures undeniable to everyone, this can be a source of hope and inspiration to rise as a city.

What is your environmental advocacy?
My heart is convinced for the protection, preservation and replenishment of the environment which leads to my Levanta Zamboanga advocacy (in English means “Rise Zamboanga”). It aims to protect, preserve, and replenish the water shed and coastal mangroves. This became my winning factor having it as my ending phrase during the Miss Zamboanga competition.

The final coronation night will be on May 11, 2014 at the Arena Mall of Asia. Let’s root for Miss Zamboanga City Margie Alatan!
