Congratulations to former Philippine Inquirer top reporter and now a PR Guru Armand Nocum and his beautiful wife Ann Sahi-Noum whose eldest daughter , Arizza Nocum, graduated with from high school with top honors and for bagging several prestigious leadership awards at the Philippine Science High School (Pisay). Armand and Ann are my godchildren in their wedding. And I am proud that they are raising their children well.

For this graduation, Armand and Ann gave the privilege to their relatives to go up the stage to hang Arizza’s other medals. You see their life, Armand said, is a typical Filipino family with OFW background. Born in Kuwait, Arizza grew up in Zamboanga in the care of her Lola Aida Natividad Nocum, my brother Joey and Arizza’s (Armand’s sister-in-law) "Mama Edel". They left Arizza into their care months after her birth so Ann can return back to work and Armand can concentrate in his early years of challenging work at the Philippine Inquirer here in Manila. They can’t thank them enough for overseeing Arizza’s well-balanced growth for two years in Zamboanga City.

Thus, it was only fitting that Armand’s mom and Edel shared the stage with them in going up the stage during the graduation rites in Pisay to pin Arizza’s medal. They credit them for playing a major role in making her not only smart but a good and emotionally matured individual with high intelligence quotient (IQ) but most specially a good emotional quotient (EQ).

On top of her academic honors, Arizza received the prestigious and highly-coveted Gerry Roxas Leadership Award (GRLA), thus joining the ranks of past awardees to include DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman, ABS-CBN’s Charo Santos; Ex-Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca; Ex-Senator Joey Lina, Ex-Budget Secretary Emilia Boncodin, Smart/PLDT’s Mon Isberto; Bishop Cis “Chito” Tagle of the Diocese of Imus (Cavite), and multi-awarded scientist Josette Biyo, among others.

The GRLA’s website says the award is given to a “graduating high-school student who has shown exemplary leadership and dynamic spirit in both academics and extra-curricular activities. Its purpose is to encourage the youth to continue to shape and live the visions they have for their communities.”

A son of President Manuel Roxas and grandfather of Sen. Mar Roxas, former Sen. Gerry Roxas was known for his exemplary public service work and love for country. The GRLA also carries a scholarship grant, the third one for Arizza who also earned scholarships by topping the entrance exams at the University of the Philippines (Oblation Scholar) and Ateneo de Manila (ADMU Director’s List).

Likewise, Arizz also won leadership awards for successfully representing the country in the 2009 Community Development and Leadership Summit in India where she was chosen to give the valedictory speech for Asia; and for her work as vice president of the Pisay Student Alliance.

Reared to help poor children from 7 years old, Philippine Science High School graduate Arizza is now harvesting a windfall of awards for her work with our A-Book-Saya Group/Kristiyano-Islam Peace Library literacy advocacy in Mindanao.

Trained to speak in front of young students who are beneficiaries of our book distribution program since 2001, ABSG/Kris Library has clearly shaped and continues to shape Arizza’s future. Thank God/Allah for ABSG/Kris Library.
