I was inspired when I became the guest of honor and speaker of the 18th Graduation Day of Don Francisco Ong C. Seng Memorial Elementary School last Monday, April 4, in Mala, Bolong. This is public school with a 2-story building that serves the constituents of this barangay.

The simple commencement exercise was well managed by Teacher-In-Charge Ricarte de Sosa and the school’s four teachers, namely, Imelda Rosal, Christie Sarmiento, Minviluz Marcelo, and Arien Andalahao. Except for one teacher, they have to commute from the city every school day to teach her. It is a love sacrifice for them, they said, to give a better future to the barangay's children.

The First Honor Pupil, Niel Vincent Trapsi, was excellent in his Valedictory address. The other honor pupils Second Honor Pupil April Grace Ancajas and Third Honor Pupil Rud Rose Deles were given active roles in the program. At this early age, the new 12 elementary graduates have already expressed what they want to be when they grow up.

In line with their graduation theme, “The Graduate: A Partner Towards Transformational Society, An Answer to Societal Change,” I talked about 2009 CNN Hero of Year Efren Peñaflorida and the late Don Francisco Ong. Peñaflorida started the Kariton Library that helped spread education in squatter areas. Don Ong’s dignity and importance of fulfilling one’s commitments is what made him a successful man. Both men believe in the value of sharing to others. One does not have to be poor or rich to reach out to others I told them.

“Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need.” Efren Peñaflorida (CNN 2009 Hero of the Year)
