It was quiet a refreshing short vacation when I went to Manila with my husband, Danny, and son, Dante, recently and met the families of my late brothers Manolo “Lo” Espiritu and Engr. Benjamin “Benjie” Espiritu. My family and I used to stay in Sta. Mesa when my hubby was assigned there in early '70's. Benjie and his family was the only close family member I had there then. They are still staying in Sampaloc where they bought 2 units of apartment.

Benjie, who passed away years ago, used to work as an Engineer in the Middle East. His wife, Telly, and 7 children were close to us. We used to parties in each other houses for special occasions. Now his children are all professionals and have their own families. It was a mixed happiness and nostalgic feelings chatting (“tsismis” too) with his wife again Telly and see how grown two of his wonderful children are Jane and Frederick.

Bella nee Espinosa Espiritu, the wife of my late brother Manolo, moved to Manila almost 20 years ago when he died here.  Eldest son, Cholo, is a senior graphic designer now of a big manufacturing company. Only daughter Chula is with a call center agent and bound to get married this year or next year. And youngest son, Peter Paul, who used to be a the lead singer of a famous band is also now working a BPO Company. They might visit Zamboanga City this coming October.

Due to the heavy traffic, long distance to travel, and I just wanted to rest, unfortunately, I was not able to visit other Espiritu Families (children of my late sister Pilar Onrubia and Rose Abella). But I do wish we will have a grand Espiritu Family reunion someday.

This is what I love of being a Filipino, no matter how long we have not met our families and friends due to distance, and when we do, it feels good to reminisce the good old days.
