To keep the camaraderie with one another, to keep in contact with one another, and keep the Clarfetion spirit in them, high school batch ’86  of Claret  School of Zamboanga City (CSZC) opened the 2001 Basketball Tournament in honor of Fr. Julian Mateos last weekend September 3 with fun fare.

The day started with a motorcade around the city and simple opening program with District 1 City Councilor Rudy Lim as guest speaker at the school’s gymnasium.  Kudos to Batch ’86 president Joey Nocum and his vice-president Allen Ruste for keeping their

CSCZ started as an exclusive school for boys in 1966 aimed at providing secondary education for those  aspiring to become future Claretians. Fr. Ignacio Blanco, CMF, was the first director with Mr. Pedro Domingo as principal.  In 1968, with Fr. Miguel Vela, CMF as director, the school was converted into a co-educational institution with a new lady principal, Ms. Nelida Barrios. Fr. Luis Rey succeeded Fr. Vela as director of Claret School of Zamboanga from 1970-1976. The high school principal during this time was Ms. Pacita Sta. Teresa.

In the time of Fr. Julian Mateos as director of Claret School of Zamboanga City from 1976-1982, two very important steps were taken which were seen as welcome additions to the growing Claretian family. These were the addition of the elementary unit in the school year 1978-1979 with Mrs. Visitacion Sanchez as principal and the opening of the night high school with Mrs. Juliet Mantilla as Teacher-in charge in the school year 1979-1980.  The opening of the night class was intended to provide opportunities to the working boys and girls in the community who have their ambitions and dreams but could not realize them because of lack of programs to attend to them.

This year, CSZC, will celebrate its 45th founding day, Saint Anthony Mary Claret Day, with “Blazing at 45!”as its theme this October. There will be exciting events set by the school alumni this year.
