Blessed are you when you honor your parents. And this is what BOSCO (Bolan Senior Citizens Organization) did last May 12, 2012 at the barangay open field during its Senior Night. The people of Boalan witnessed 3 parents of this serene barangay were recognized as 2012 Outstanding Parents of the Year. It was an inspirational event worthy to be emulated in all barangays. Barangay parents should be recognized for their sacrifices and their effort in rearing up their children. They become role models. And it's a blessing to a barangay.

Former coconut farm worker and vegetable/fruit/wood vendor Genaro Tan and his supportive wife Modesta was declared as the Most Outstanding Parents. Despite they were not able to finish their own education; they were able to rear up 8 children and produced 3 school teachers who are now presently teaching at Boalan Elementary School. The other awardees are Priscilla Casimiro as the Dedicated Parent of the Year and Teresita Apolinario as the Supportive Parent of the Year.

Major credit goes to Zamboanga City Councilor Benjamin “Nonong” Guingona, the city chairman for the disadvantage group. This kind of active city councilor should be commended for his untiring community services. For one, he has fight with all his might to protect the rights and privileges of senior citizens particularly in getting their 20% senior discounts from business establishments. He is also very approachable even to constituents not under his district. I hope he will continue to serve as government official when his last term as city councilor ends next year.

I was honored to chair the search committee together with the president of Montessori de Zamboanga Ramona Salazar as member, and Rosario Constantino and Alvin Perez as screening committee chairman and selection committee, respectively. The search organizer was civic leader Tessie Alavar. Like her son, City Councilor Mike Alavar, Tessie has a big heart for public service.
