If there is one social event I will do my best not to miss every year from now on, it is the birthday of businessman and civic leader Dr. Luis Alvarez Sr. People attend it because they love this man who one way or another have touched their lives. He gives you an inspiration about the goodness of life and creates in you a desire to live happily. My son, Dante, calls him idol for they can talk for hours. He gives him (Dante) advises and life’s lessons that he (Dante) said will treasure forever.

And why do I look forward to his next natal days? Four more years, he will be 100 and beyond. Aside there are only few people who reaches around this age nowadays, Dr. Alvarez is one man people admire and are awed because this ageing man can still dance ballroom, swim and do few laps in the pool, and lately, go malling in MOA (Mall of Asia) and buy his own clothes and shoes . He can even text and call using his cellphone.

Retire from work? Nah, he still goes to his office every working day to check what’s happening. He still attends business meetings and events. And according to Dante, what is commendable about him, he makes it a point to make it on time on appointments and calls if he will be late or could not attend. He is a man of honor indeed worthy of respect.

Last August 24, 2012 when Dr. Alvarez Sr. turned 96, he was given a grand red birthday party at Palmeras Ballroom by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. More than a thanksgiving celebration, it was a tribute to a patriarch who still gives strength, honor and pride to the family. I am sure like the rest of the invited guests, we all felt the Alvarez Family great love for this awesome father, grandfather and great grandfather. It was a night that inspired us that we should do the same and show our love and appreciation to our respective fathers.

Thank you, Dr. Alvarez Sr., for your exemplary life. Good health and cheers to you!

Dr. Luis K. Alvarez Sr. was conferred with the degree of humanities causa by the Cebu University of Theology last August 25 in a formal ceremony at Lantaka Hotel. He was highly recommended by the Philippine Red Cross-Zamboanga Chapter for his humanitarian and philanthropic work for his beloved Zamboanga City.
