The social event, 2012 Ballroom Extravaganza II of Zonta Club of Zamboanga City, will usher in the coming Christmas season with fun and revelry for a good purpose on November 30 (this Friday) at the Plaza Astoria of grand Astoria Hotel. To add excitement, there will be prizes for best dancers, best dressed, and other surprises. One of Zamboanga City's best ballroom dancers, Christine Gapoy and her partner, will do the opening dance number.

Aimed to raise funds for the different noble projects and programs of Zonta in this city, Zamboanga City’s ballroom enthusiasts together with local best professional dancers will surely enjoy the evening dancing the hits of the 50’s to 90’s up to the latest modern ballroom. Supporters of the club who are not ballroom dancers have been buying tickets also as they believe in the cause of the affair which is chair by beauteous Zontian Rita Ong.

The proceeds of this social event will help support maintain the Zonta Ayudahan Center in Canelar, the Zonta Housing Project in Bolong, the different  Zonta scholars, medical and dental programs, as well the assistance the club extend every time there is a calamity in our city. The Zonta Ayudahan Center building is one our city’s well maintained charitable centers. It serves as a learning and training venue for the surrounding communities.

Zonta Club, founded in 1919 at New York, is an international organization of professional and business women. It continues to contribute to the improvement of legal leadership, political, economic, educational, health, and professional status of women all over the world. The Zonta word came from the Teton dialect of the native Sioux American language which means honesty and trustworthiness.

It is composed of professional and career women who aims to uplift the lives especially their fellow women, children of the street, and indigent communities. Zonta Zamboanga is one of the active multi-awarded all women civic organizations of this city. It has received multi-awards and recognitions from different institutions.

Current local Zonta president is active civic and religious leader Pilar Torres. Her  President-Elect is PNB Manager Evelyn Balbon with  Syra Ong as the club’s  Vice-President. The other active officers of the club are Recording Secretary Ophelia Gayanilo, Corresponding Secretary Rosella Tan, and Treasurer  Rita Ong.

The Board of Directors are Mary Usman,Dr. Mila Fernandez, Dr. Cely Tan, Dr. Bernie Santiago, and Immediate Past President Rowena Tan. The club’s new members are Lyn Sy, Jennifer Que, Fatima Bagis III, Cherry Belle Chua, Mary Sharon Ty, Charina San Luis, Bella Tandoc, and Sheila Marie Tan.
