The graduation rite of Western Mindanao State University College of Nursing last April 12, 2013 was memorable for me and my family. It was WMSU 38th pinning and 68th commencement exercise with the theme “Inspiring The Filipino Nursing Workforce Towards Equity and Access to Health care”.

My second grandson, Anthony “Bimbo” Corteza was one of the graduates together with the grandson, Aaron Espiritu, of my late brother Ramon Espiritu. They marched together with Kimberly Joy Cruz (Bimbo’s special girl) and Delfin Luis Masamayor son of Sammy and Melinda (who is the cousin of my daughter in-law Bebot). We wish them all the best as they prepare to take the nursing board exam.

It was doubly special because it was the first nursing graduation ceremony under current WMSU president Dr. Milabel Ho. She is one of the closest teachers of my nurse daughter Christl. Their bonding has extended to our family and we treat Dr. Ho as part of us already for more than two decades. We keep updating what’s happening with one another.

My eldest son, Dr. Danilo Corteza  (Bimbo’s Dad), is the new WMSU Board Secretary. He got promoted together with her as they have been working efficiently together for years. As a tandem and with the full support of the university’s administration, faculty, and students, everybody believes that WMSU will be one of the finest universities in Mindanao.

The message of the graduation special guest, Zamboanga City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos, was inspiring. His message didn’t only move the graduates but parents like me and other guests. We can be great and successful if we will it to be, he said.

Bimbo’s graduation was held after at Kape Zambo. This place really serves good food and delicious drinks. But the best about it, it didn’t cost that much.
