The Mariposa de Zamboanga Organization successfully staged for the second time the Miss Mariposa de Zamboanga Beauty and Personality Pageant last July 7, 2013 in Paseo del Mar. According to the organizer, this is the only gay alternative pageant staged with a noble cause participated by gay men, cross-dressers, drag queens and transsexuals. Winners from last year have gained exposure from the pageant as they were able to perform their talents in many occasions as professional performers.

This year’s contest focused on HIV-AIDS awareness with the theme, “Sounds and Colors of Zamboanga.”  Aside from showcasing the beauty of the diversity of GBT (Gay Bisexual and Transsexual) culture and traditions in the peninsula, Mariposa is strongly supporting the health programs of Zamboanga City Health Office and Department of Health in the fight against the proliferations of dreaded sexual disease.

Aside from fostering better understanding and acceptance of the GBT community; Mariposa is a venue for the GBT to express their creativity and talent in a wider audience as well build friendship and share ideas to foster better understanding and acceptance of them.

Mariposa de Talon-Talon won the title as Miss Mariposa de Zamboanga 2013 with Mariposa de Zone 4 as 1st Runner up and Mariposa de Lower Calarian as 2nd Runner-Up.  They will advocate healthy lifestyle of living, participates in HIV/AIDS information and disseminations, fight against discriminations, and be involved in socio-civic activities.

Mariposa de Zamboanga Organization is spearheaded by amiable Edwin Abu and Allan Tahamid. This year’s event was supported by the City Government of Zamboanga, Zamboanga City Health Office-Reproductive Health and Wellness Center, the Department of Health (DOH), HOT FM, Al-Shamer Abdul, Fotospeed Digital Studio, and Silver Toribio.
