As we celebrate our city’s 74th Charter Anniversary on the 26th, let’s give a warm welcome to our visitors and friends especially if they are here for the first time. It was on February 26, 1937, when Zamboanga City gained the status as chartered city with Mayor Nicasio Valderroza.

One of the highlights of the celebration this year is the opening today of the Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011 at the Mindpro Cinema.  10 independent Filipino films including the "Zamboanga" will be shown by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). This is in line with the slogan “Bringing Back Filipino Films to the Filipinos”. This festival was formalized during the signing of memorandum of agreement between FDCP chair Briccio Santos and Mayor Celso Lobregat.

Tonight will be the film festival “Red Carpet Night” at the National Museum Courtyard while the festival’s Recognition Night will be tomorrow at the La Vista del Mar. The most awaited  search for the Señorita/Señorita de Salud, a popularity contest organized by the City Health, will be held this afternoon at the Zamboanga City Coliseum.

On this day too, residents and visitors will witness a talk and a book launching dubbed “Peace Warriors: On Trail with Filipino Soldiers”, organized by the office of Cong. Beng Climaco-Salazar at Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
The Dia celebration started yesterday with the exciting cheer dance competition at the Zamboanga City Coliseum in Tetuan.

Winners to the “Competicion de Selyo” will also be announced during the program.

Special guest of honor and speaker will be Navy Flag Officer-In Command Rear Admiral Alexander Pama who used to be assigned here. He is Zamboanga’s adopted son who during his round of duty gained the high respect and admiration of the Zamboagueños.

The Zamboanga Chabacano Angler’s Club (ZCAC) will also sponsor the 1st Fishing Competition at the Country Club Golf Course and Beach Resort on the 26th.
