Aside as the home of beautiful ladies, Zamboanga City is creating a niche in the fashion industry with its formal and elegant long gown called Mascota. A Spanish-inspired formal wear during the Spanish era, Mascota has revolved into a more sophisticated glamor wear with an annual design competition sponsored by the local city government.

Beautiful Zamboagueñas who models the creations enlivened too the city’s most awaited fashion competition, Mascota de Zamboanga. This year’s contest 11 creative local designers participated which was held at Centro Latino last December 17.

Top local designer Frederic Navarro won first place with Kurth David Luyao in second place, and Al-Shamer Abdul as the third winner. The three top designers took home cash prizes in the amount of Php 50,000.00, Php 30,000.00 and Php 20,000.00, respectively.
The top Mascota models who got the judges nods were Hyacinth Lim, Dianne Vargas and Henkel Julian. The judges were City Councilor Myra Paz Abubakar,  business woman Amelia Chiong, and Dexter Jinete.

The other designers who made it in this final list were Mandrake Servito, Gerry Carpio, Gari Luna, Vicky Go Tonggal, Raustin Siocon III, Husni Sali, Ernie Kwan, Justin Mejia, Joy Verar, Olivia Samson, and Monching Fernandez.

This design competition is one of the activities lined up for the 2013 Pascua na Zamboanga festival, with the theme "Build Back Better Un Familia Zamboangueno." Normally, it is being held during the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival in October under the helm of the City Tourism Office.
