The Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point and the Local Council of Women (LCW) of Zamboanga will have multi-sectoral activities today in line with the celebration of the National Women’s Month this March.

With the theme, “Mujer: El Fuerza Di Tuyo Es El Fuerza de Todo Para Lebanta y Adelanta,” this is a timely event calling all women forces in this city to stand up and make a difference.  Since our city is facing challenges nowadays and we have a woman mayor, local women should support our City Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar in every way we can.

Today’s event will start with an early morning parade from the city fire station up to Paseo del Mar where more activities await. There will be a Zumba exercise first, then a short program before the opening of the trade exhibit at the Centro Latino. Booths will be selling food products and handicrafts as well offer manicure/pedicure, foot spa, and massage services. The proceeds raised will be donated to marginalized women groups, such as the breast cancer patients or the women inmates at the City Reformatory Center. Highlight also is the forming of human symbol by women.

This year’s Marcha affair is spearheaded by City Councilor Myra Paz Abubakar and Dr. Mila Fernandez who heads the LCW.
“Women in the world are dealing with the effects of political situations, violence, extreme poverty and natural situations caused by the destruction and over-exploitation of nature, including by mining companies. These situations are affecting the lives of all women worldwide and it challenges us to find creative forms to confront. However, we organize ourselves and continue to advance our actions and struggles that can build alternatives for women to live in fulfillness.” 2014 International Women’s Day Declaration.
