The Gawad Kalinga (GK) has issued the call for volunteers to join the 2014 Bayani Challenge, an annual program which seeks to foster solidarity and the missionary spirit through volunteerism and bayanihan.

“The Bayani Challenge for this year is really about volunteerism,” said Warren Gornez, Team Leader of the 2014 Bayanihan Challenge during the team’s courtesy call to City Mayor Beng Climaco Friday, March 14.

The Bayani Challenge is an annual gathering of volunteers for national immersion and nation-building activities. It highlights the Filipino concept of bayanihan, a relationship between Filipinos which refuse to leave each other behind.

According to Gornez, the 2014 Bayani Challenge seeks to gather one million volunteers nationwide and will concentrate on helping Zamboanga City, Bohol, and Yolanda-stricken provinces in Visayas, recover and rise up from devastations from the man-made and natural disasters which occurred last 2013.

For Zamboanga City, the GK is aiming to gather a minimum of 80,000 volunteers, said Gornez.

“Hopefully we can inspire other individuals, groups, schools, and the local government to rally in helping those who are in need,” said Gornez.

From April 9 – June 12, the Bayani Challenge volunteers will dedicate five days of volunteer service for activities which include, but are not limited to, house building, paraisong pambata, health missions, clean-up drive, school refurbishing, and tree planting.

Gornez hopes that the experience will help the affected residents move on from the conflict, and most importantly, inspire the youth to make volunteerism a habit.
