Mayor Beng Climaco welcomes the appointment of Bishop Romulo T. de la Cruz as the new archbishop of Zamboanga, a position that has remained vacant since May 2012.

“We welcome Bishop Romy (de la Cruz) to the City. His experiences in Basilan in the most difficult times of Fr. Gallardo will guide us in overcoming our trials,” the mayor stated Saturday upon hearing the news that Pope Francis has appointed de la Cruz to the post, 7pm, Saturday (March 15).

Archbishop de la Cruz takes over the post left by Archbishop Romulo Valles, who is now the head of the Archdiocese of Davao. He used to be the head of the Diocese of Kidapawan.

Quoting on-line news from the Vatican, the new archbishop was born in Balasan, on June 24, 1947, and received his priestly formation at the Grand Seminary in Davao City. He pursued further study at the Summer Institute on Pastoral Counseling in Quezon City, and then at the Institute on Religious Formation in St. Louis, United States.

He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Cotabato on 8 December 1972, after which he served as a pastor. From 1976 to 1983, he was rector of Notre Dame Archdiocesan Seminary in Cotabato, after which he was named vicar general.

In 1987, he was named coadjutor bishop of Isabela and ordained to the episcopate the following year, becoming the ordinary in 1989.

In 2001, he was named coadjutor at San José de Antigue, becoming the ordinary the following year. He was named bishop of the Diocese of Kidapawan in 2008.

Mayor Climaco, meanwhile thanked Zamboanga Archdiocese Administrator Monsignor Crisologo Manongas for doing a great job despite the absence of an Archbishop in Zamboanga for almost two years now.

“We need to remain in Zamboanga City and be courageous as what Msgr. Cris Manongas emphasized. We too extend our gratitude to Msgr. Cris guiding, responding and helping us during the siege prior and beyond.”

Msgr. Manongas has been designated Zamboanga Archdiocese administrator since 2012 after Archbishop Romulo Valles left Zamboanga and installed as head of the Archdiocese of Davao. — Sheila Covarrubias
