The city government will have to spend more than P1 million to close the existing controlled dumpsite once the newly-completed sanitary landfill will be opened.

The controlled dumpsite is located in Barangay Lumbangan, 8.85 kilometers east of this city, while the sanitary landfill is situated in Barangay Salaan, 15 kilometers east of City Hall.

Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) Head Eng’r. Reynaldo Gonzales said the expenses to be incurred in closing the controlled dumpsite is for the construction of drainage, capping, lining, gas vents and slope stabilization.

Gonzales said that it will take several months to close the dumpsite after the start of the first process, wherein “dumping of garbage will no longer be permitted in the area.”

Gonzales however said that this city material recovery facility will remain at the Lumbangan dumpsite and it will be utilized as a transfer station.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the preparations for the operations of the newly-completed sanitary landfill continues. — RGAAG
