Mayor Beng Climaco has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the United Nation team and other agencies that continue to help Zamboanga in its recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

“We would not have made it without all of you, whose dedication beyond the wee hours of the flooded nights and stringent monitoring has kept us organized,” the mayor said.

Climaco led government agencies in meeting with the UN team headed by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Luiza Carvalho to assess and evaluate the Zamboanga Action Plan last Tuesday, March 18.

As we enter the next phase of recovery to rehab, we hope to hurdle the challenges each phase brings. We are happy to see smiles on people’s faces as they resiliently face the problems. With God’s grace and your extended help, we can really build back a better Zamboanga for our people so that our children can indeed have a better future,” Climaco stressed.

During the joint meeting of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) and the Local Inter-Agency Committee (LIAC) Wednesday afternoon, Climaco reiterated her expression of gratitude to the UN humanitarian partners including national agencies that continue to remain in the city and provide interventions for internally displaced persons in the evacuation centers, transition sites and host communities.

“How are we surviving, it is because of these humanitarian partners that we are able to sustain the gains with the help of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in terms of humanitarian activities,” the mayor said.

Since September, UN interventions for siege victims have reached some $100M coursed through the different UN partner agencies.

Mayor Climaco has expressed hopes that the UN will extend the assistance program to Zamboanga City stressing that the city is not yet capable of being fully independent at this time. — Sheila Covarrubias
