The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Regional Office 9 and Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD) the other day conducted a fire drill competition dubbed as “Fire Olympics 2014,” at the Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School grounds,  Gov. Ramos Avenue, Sta Maria, this city. The opening program was graced by Councilor Roel “Elong” Natividad as guest of honor and speaker.

ZCFD District Fire Marshal Supt. Dominador F. Zabala Jr, said that four Volunteer Fire Brigade (VFB) teams were selected from the different barangay and industrial company under the areas of responsibilities of the Zamboanga City Fire District participated in this one-day activity.

Zabala said there were four events during the competition, which include Fire Extinguisher Relay, Bucket Relay and Hose Laying and Replacement of Busted Hose.

He added that the annual “Fire Olympics” is part of the various activities lined up during the observance of Fire Prevention Month. It aims to promote camaraderie, unity and teamwork by and among VFB members and further to enhance their skills, maintain stamina to make them (fire volunteers) efficient and effective during any fire fighting operations.

He said the awarding of prizes and recognition of winners will be held during the “Fire Prevention Month” culminating program on March 31, 2014.

“As always we are appealing to the general public to be extra fire-safety conscious and to help prevent fires and make everyday a fire prevention day to prevent the loss of lives and properties,” Supt. Zabala concluded.
