Mayor Beng Climaco, who makes health as one of her administration’s priorities, led hundreds of government employees and health workers including students and civil society groups in the celebration of World TB Day yesterday at the Social Hall of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in Baliwasan, this city.

In her message, Mayor Climaco said that tuberculosis is a reality that the society has to face nowadays, for which there really is a need for awareness, response and prevention of the disease, which is now curable.

She also thanked the city government’s TB task force members and health workers in the barangays, saying that that their presence despite the distance was a manifestation of the city’s commitment in the fight against TB.

From WMSU, the participants proceeded to the nearby grandstand where 6 to 7 TB cases had been monitored among the internally displaced persons (IDPs), the latest of which was a 12-year-old child who died of the disease.

The World TB Day is observed every March 24 of the year, marking the day (March 24, 1882) when Robert Koch, a German physician and scientist, discovered the Mycobacterium that causes tuberculosis.

For his part, City Health Officer Dr. Rodelin Agbulos warned that the most susceptible to TB are people with HIV, overcrowding and malnutrition, illegal drug injection, homeless, medically underprivileged, ethnic minority and health care providers.

He said the fight against TB in Zamboanga City has dramatically improved as shown in the decrease in the number of cases, primarily due to the availability of anti-TB medicines in the barangay health centers.

The Hermosa TB Council officers chaired by Mayor Climaco were also sworn to office by City Legal Officer Jesus Carbon. — Vic Larato
