Dina T. Dianching is now 13 years old. She would have lost her life if not for “Kabang”, the hero dog, that crossed the street to block an on-coming speeding motorcycle that would have smashed Dina’s head. “Kabang” lost her snout in that accident.

For humanitarian reasons, “Kabang” was flown to Los Angeles, California by animal doctor Anton Lim to have her snout fixed by experts in one of the hospitals there. She was diagnosed for suffering from a dog disease and was treated for it, instead.

This story is not about “Kabang” for she has been featured many times by local and foreign media. This story is about Dina, the girl who took care of her.

Dina just graduated from elementary at the Putik Central School with high grades. Having come from a poor family, Alsons Power Group, specifically San Ramon Power Inc.(SRPI) and Western Mindanao Power Corporation (WMPC), decided to grant her a scholarship with a monthly stipend, for as long as she can maintain her grades.

“This scholarship and the monthly allowance granted to me by Alsons help me and my family tremendously,” Dina says. “I hope I can maintain my grades next school year (when she turns Grade V) and make my mother happy,” she added.

Putik school principal, Ms.Lepidaptera T. Villanueva, said that Dina is a smart pupil. Mrs. Villanueva runs a school that has over 400 slots for indigent pupils.

In last Wednesday’s school Recognition Day, Dina was presented a plaque of scholarship by SRPI and WMPC. The paper was signed by Tirso G. Santillan, chief executive officer and executive vice president of Alsons Power Group, and presented in his behalf to Dina by SRPI Consultant Ruben Conti.

But this is not the end of the story among Dina, Kabang and Alsons.— BJ
