The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Regional Office 9 and Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD) office jointly culminated the observance of Fire Prevention Month on March 31 with a simple program at the BFP9/ZCFD grounds highlighting the giving of awards to the winners of this year’s “Fire Olympics 2014” held last March 22 and 29 at the Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School grounds in Sta. Maria, this city.

The program was graced by Regional Director Adriano D Fuego of the Office of the Civil Defense, Regional Office 9 as the guest of honor and speaker and Councilor Roel “Elong” Natividad, representing the Office of the City Mayor, who gave a special message.

ZCFD Fire Marshal Supt. Dominador F. Zabala Jr, described the observance of Fire Prevention Month (the whole month of March) as generally successful and their office is just on top of the situation. For the period of the observance, all fire stations citywide vigorously conducted fire safety inspection and prevention activities such as fire exit drills to include giving briefing/instructions/seminars and intensifying information/education campaign in schools and various establishments in this city on how to prevent fires. Zabala said.

Meantime, Zabala added that 14 minor and one major fire incidents were recorded by their office for the month of March compared to 5 in 2013 during the same month. Damaged to property was estimated at P6.5 million more or less compared to P1.2 million in 2013. One fatality and two injuries were reported for this year’s fire prevention month.    Several fire incidents this year attributed to the power (electrical brownout/blackout) problem being experienced in the city.

He said that effective fire prevention techniques and campaigns could greatly reduce incidence of fires, which could destroy millions of properties and even lives.

Even if fire prevention month is over, all fire stations in the city will continue to conduct periodic inspection on establishments and will aggressively focus on fire prevention and information awareness campaigns until the end of this year per marching order of the City Mayor.

The ZCFD also expresses deepest gratitude to the media, the Zamboanga City LGU, the participants of the VFB “Fire Olympics 2014”, and all those who extended invaluable assistance and support in the various activities conducted during fire month.

Fire prevention is a day-to-day basis and is everybody’s concern, extending beyond the observance of fire month, Zabala said.
