The City Government of Zamboanga, through the Communications Working Group, national agencies and humanitarian partners, met the IDP families sheltered in the Zamboanga City East and West Central School Thursday, April 3, for the fourth leg of the Information Caravan series.

Around 150 IDPs joined the half-day activity as representatives of the different local and national agencies working for reconstruction and recovery of Zamboanga City shared critical information on housing, shelter and tagging concerns, social services, livelihood options, and other rehabilitation measures currently being implemented.

Capping the information caravan presentations was the open forum where IDPs voiced out their questions regarding housing, the possible extension of their stay in the Central school, other assistance provided by the DSWD, and other concerns.

Additionally, help desks were also set up by the DSWD and the Department of Labor and Employment to further supplement the information provided during the presentations, and the open forum. These included information on the Balik Probinsiya and Barangay programs, livelihood training opportunities, and the rental assistance scheme of the DSWD.

For their part, the IDPs expressed their appreciation for the efforts of the local government but at the same time, reiterated their desire and hope to be able to return to their communities to rebuild their homes at the soonest possible time.

The Information Caravan series, which kicked off last March at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex, is response to the pressing need of IDPs for accurate and timely information regarding recovery and rehabilitation initiatives.

For its fifth leg set next week, the information caravan will gather and meet with home-based IDPs living with relatives and families in different communities in the City. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
