House Deputy Speaker Beng Climaco remains consistent in her advocacies and concerns for the youth, as she authors several house bills in the 15th Congress for the protection of children’s welfare in its different sectors.

This includes House Bill (HB) 1712 entitled An Act Providing for the Special Protection of Children in Situations of Armed Conflict. This proposed bill recognizes the explicit priority that should be given to children in peace building, as it is they who hold the future of the country.

Deputy Speaker Climaco, whose battle cry is “Let’s help make our children’s future a reality today”, said that children in situations of armed conflicts are supposedly treated as victims of incessant fights. Their rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration to the society are the foremost objective of this bill. These children should not be holding out firearms or even be collateral damaged by conflicts between adults.

In her recent talk with the media launch of UNICEF’s The State of the World’s Children Report 2011: Adolescence An Age of Opportunity, she highlighted the need to invest in the Filipino youth.

“Our young people can change the world. We just need to assure that their voices are heard as they participate and influence the decisions that affect their future. Together we can start making our children’s future a reality today,” Climaco said.

Aside from legislation, the lady solon from District I had also focused attention in implementing other programs and projects aimed to give the youth a better future. — Rham Joseph Cabasag
