Residents of Sitio Catumbal, Barangay Cabaluay yesterday thanked Mayor Beng Climaco for giving them free medical and dental services as part of the “Dia del Alcalde” yesterday morning.

“Gracias gayod kun Ma’am Beng kay ya dale ele kanamun libre medisina y libre checkup. Hende ya kame anda pa na pueblo para manda chekya na doctor,” an elderly woman said.

At least 300 mostly indigent residents of Catumbal availed of various services from medical and dental to agriculture and veterinary assistance, considering the barangay’s main livelihood is farming and hog raising.

The activity is part of Mayor Climaco’s priority on health, next to security and education. It is being held during barangay fiestas, depending on the request of the barangay officials.

Meanwhile, the internally displaced persons (IDPs) occupying the JFE Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan and Cawa-Cawa shorelines received free medical checkups, medicines and food packs last Wednesday at the grandstand.

The medical mission was conducted by the Physicians Across Continents (PAC), a Saudi based medical team, upon the request of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) in coordination with the City Health Office and other agencies.

This, the recovery program of the city government is focused on the health condition of the IDPs following the reported deaths of evacuees suffering from different diseases.

Among the killer diseases were diarrhea, pneumonia, acute gastroenteritis, hypertension, cardiac arrest, asthma, complications with stroke and birth or neonatal deaths.

Aside from continuous health monitoring and medical assistance, the City Health Office cited one measure that would prevent further deaths among IDPs, and that is to decongest the two evacuation centers by transferring the IDPs to the transitory sites of their choice.

These sites are located in Taluksangay,Tulungatung and soon in Mampang and the PTSI property in Upper Calarian.

The city government, however, has clarified that the transfer of IDPs to the transitory sites is voluntary and willingness of the IDPs to move out of the evacuation centers, pending the construction of their permanent homes under the build back better strategy.— Vic Larato
