Zamboanga City’s radio veteran Leoncio “Butch” Bustamante died of heart attack last April 2 at the age of 68.

Butch is survived by his wife retired public school teacher Mrs Marsha Bustamante and a son and a daughter.

He started his career in radio in 1968 as an announcer of the defunct DXYZ of the National Broadcasting Corporation where he later became its station manager.In 1975, NBC transferred him as station manager of DXRO in Cotabato City and DXFM and DXRD in Davao City.

Bustamante returned to Zamboanga City to manage UMBN’s DXRZ from 1979 to 1987. His career in radio broadcasting expanded when he also joined  the defunct DXLL in Zamboanga City and DXBS in Basilan. For a while he became news anchor of ABS-CBN Zamboanga City TV patrol when the late Danny Bernardo was the station manager.

Among his contemporaries in radio were the late Eddie Rodriguez, Johnny Lewis, Danny Bernardo, Frank Altea, Romy Enriquez, Eddie Enriquez. Others who are still living radio buddies of Butch were Jimmy Cabato and Max Enriquez.

He was also a columnist of the late Noel Erasga’s Zamboanga Star community newspaper.
