Spanish cultural director is WMSU commencement speaker on March 31 PDF Print E-mail

Mr. Jose R. Rodriguez, Director of Instituto Cervantes in Manila, the Spanish Cultural Center, will be the guest of speaker during the 66th Commencement Exercises of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), second batch, which will be held this morning at the Dr. Juanito Bruno gymnasium, WMSU campus, this city.

A native of Galicia, Spain, Rodriguez is married to the known Filipino portrait artist Lourdes Coching with whom he has two children.

A writer and a journalist by profession, Rodriguez has been a correspondent for major Spanish dailies and later joined the Spanish News Agency. It was during his stint when the agency opened an English-language world service headquarters in Manila in the nineties.

In 1992, he was elected president of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines, and president of the Manila Overseas Press Club in 1995. He is also a member of the International Press Institute, the ASEAN Journalists Association and the National Press Club of the Philippines.

In 2008, Rodriguez came to Zamboanga to sign an agreement with WMSU for cultural exchanges and Spanish language teaching engagements. Rodriguez represented Instituto Cervantes while Dr. Grace J. Rebollos represented WMSU in the signing of the agreement which was done at the city hall in the presence of Mayor Celso L. Lobregat, Honorable Congresswoman Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, other city officials as well as officials of WMSU.

The WMSU community looks forward to welcoming Rodriguez again, this time, as commencement speaker to tackle the theme, ‘The WMSU Graduate: Expanding the Frontiers of Service and Social Responsibility to the Global Community’.
