Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Assistant Secretary Raymond Liboro has lauded all Local Government Units (LGUs) during the two-day launching of “Iba na ang Panahon: Science for Safer Communities,” held April 7-8, 2014, at a local hotel.

“Masaya kame sa Region-9 dahil sa dami ng participants na dumalo at sa mainit na pagtanggap sa amin ng mga LGU mayors, Disaster Risk Management (DRM) officers and DOST Regional Director Brenda Nazareth-Manzano. Region-9 is very much aware of their role in preparing for disasters,” Liboro said.

He said the occasion is one of the priority programs of President Benigno S. Aquino III, to conduct necessary disaster management actions nationwide ahead of typhoon season .

“This is all about early warning and early action. We are hoping to put all these things into action (before any calamities or hazards that may occur),” Liboro added.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director Paizal Abutazil said LGUs should organize Disaster Risk Management (DRM) officers permanently not temporary.

“So that capacity building is a continuing process as DILG can provide a workable plan in partnership with LGU’s and concern national agencies,” Abutazil said.

Some of the objectives of the occasion is to know the latest information, protocols and technologies related to Philippine multi-hazards; Understand the regional (macro) and provincial (local) perspectives on disasters in the area for the update and revision of community disaster plans; and practice the end-to-end disaster communication protocol to different disasters based on their warning lead time.
